The Heart on the wall

There is an old building in Tuesday Market Place, number 15, which was re-fronted in the Georgian period, It has a witchcraft symbol shaped like a diamond surrounding a heart on the window lintel. In 1616 a young woman called Mary Smith is supposed to have cursed a sailor who hit her son. The curse apparently was very effective and the woman was tried and hanged for witchcraft. She proclaimed her innocence stating that when she died her heart would fly from her body and settle on the window of Rev. Roberts, the priest who had declared her a witch. As she was dying, her heart is said to have sprung away from her body landing on the house. This is how the Witches Heart was created on the house in Tuesday Market Street.
